ASTM A36 Standard specification for Carbon Structural Steel

1.2 Supplementary requirements are provided for use where additional testing or additional restrictions are required by the purchaser. Such requirements apply only when specified in the
purchase order.
1.3 When the steel is to be welded, a welding procedure suitable for the grade of steel and intended use or service is to be utilized. See Appendix X3 of Specification A 6/A 6M for information on weldability.
1.4 For Group 4 and 5 wide flange shapes for use in tension, it is recommended that the purchaser consider specifying supplementary requirements, such as fine austenitic grain size and Charpy V-Notch Impact testing.
1.5 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system is to be used independently of the other, without combining values in any way.
1.6 The text of this specification contains notes or footnotes, or both, that provide explanatory material. Such notes and footnotes, excluding those in tables and figures, do not contain any mandatory requirements.
1.7 For plates cut from coiled product, the additional requirements, including additional testing requirements and the reporting of additional test results, of A 6/A 6M apply.

ASTM A20 Standard Spec for General Requirements

1. Scope
1.1 This specification2 covers a group of common requirements which, unless otherwise specified in the individual material specification, shall apply to rolled steel plates for pressure vessels under each of the following specifications issued by ASTM:

ASTM A20 Requirements for Steel

1.1.1 This specification also covers a group of supplementary requirements which are applicable to several of the above specifications as indicated therein. These are provided for use when additional testing or inspection is desired and apply only when specified individually by the purchaser in the order.
1.2 Appendix X1 describes the production and some of the characteristics of coiled product from which pressure vessel plates may be produced.
1.3 Appendix X2 provides information on the variability of tensile properties in plates for pressure vessels.
1.4 Appendix X3 provides information on the variability of Charpy-V-Notch impact test properties in plates for pressure vessels.
1.5 These materials are intended to be suitable for fusion welding. When the steel is to be welded, it is presupposed that a welding procedure suitable for the grade of steel and intended
use or service will be utilized.
1.6 In case of any conflict in requirements, the requirements of the individual material specification shall prevail over those of this general specification.
1.7 The purchaser may specify additional requirements which do not negate any of the provisions of this general specification or of the individual material specifications. Such additional requirements, the acceptance of which are subject to negotiation with the supplier, must be included in the order information (see 4.1.8).
1.8 For purposes of determining conformance with this specification and the various material specifications referenced in 1.1, values shall be rounded to the nearest unit in the right-hand place of figures used in expressing the limiting values in accordance with the rounding method of Practice E 29.
1.9 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents. Therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with this specification.
1.10 This specification and the applicable material specifications are expressed in both inch-pound units and SI units.
However, unless the order specifies the applicable “M” specification designation (SI units), the material shall be furnished to inch-pound units.

1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded as the standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the specification.
1.4 For purposes of determining conformance to this specification and the various material specifications referenced in 1.1, dimensional values shall be rounded to the nearest unit in the right-hand place of figures used in expressing the limiting values in accordance with the rounding method of Practice E 29.

Standard Practice for Concrete Pavements

1. Purpose. This manual provides information on the materials and construction procedures for concrete pavements.

2. Scope. This manual describes the constituents to be used in concrete, the procedures to be used in manufacturing concrete, and the equipment and procedures to place, texture, and cure concrete for pavements.

3. Responsibilities, strength, and air content.

a. Responsibility for mixture proportioning. The responsibility for mixture proportioning must be clearly assigned to either the contractor or the contracting officer in the project specifications.
When the contracting officer is responsible for mixture proportioning, he will approve all concrete materials as well as determine and adjust proportions of all concrete mixtures as necessary to obtain the strength and quality of concrete required for the pavements. Cement will be a separate pay item in the contract. When the contractor is responsible for mixture proportioning, he will control all proportions of the concrete mixture necessary to obtain the strength and quality of the concrete required for the pavements, and cement will not be a separate pay item in the contract. However, the contracting officer is responsible for approving the quality of all materials the contractor uses in the concrete.

b. Approval responsibility. The contracting officer is responsible for approval of all materials, mixture proportions, plants, construction equipment, and construction procedures proposed for use by the contractor. The contractor must submit proposed mixtures if he is responsible for mixture proportioning; samples of all materials; and detailed descriptions of all plants, construction equipment, and proposed construction procedures prior to the start of construction.

c. Flexural strength. Structural designs are based on flexural strengths that the concrete is expected to obtain at 28 days for road pavements and 90 days for airfield pavements. These ages are not adequate for quality control in the field since a large amount of low-strength concrete could be placed before strength tests on samples revealed the problem.

Correlations can be established between a 14-day strength and the 28- or 90–day strength used in design, and this correlated 14-day strength can be used as a strength check for a more timely concrete mixture control in the field....

ASTM A370-07

Standard Test Methods and Definitions for Mechanical Testing of Steel Products.
These test methods cover procedures and definitions for the mechanical testing of steels, stainless steels, and related alloys. The various mechanical tests herein described are used to determine properties required in the product specifications. Variations in testing methods are to be avoided, and standard methods of testing are to be followed to obtain reproducible and comparable results. In those cases in which the testing requirements for certain products are unique or at variance with these general procedures, the product specification testing requirements shall control.
